AchieveEnglish™

By 2010, more than 30% of students will come from homes in which the primary language is not English.  Our AchieveEnglish program helps those students develop their basic social and academic vocabulary to make them more confident and successful classroom learners.

AchieveEnglish is based on leading educational research and effective instructional practices for English-language learners. Instruction is delivered in a small-group setting (typically 6:1) and addresses all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is on developing phonemic awareness, authentic communication, comprehension, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and decoding proficiency, which is critical for academic success.

The AchieveEnglish program is based on the English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards adopted by many states which address English literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary and comprehension skills that English learners must acquire in order to become proficient in the ELA content standards. It also aligns with TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) goals.

The elementary level program (Grades K-5) addresses the needs of students whose second language acquisition falls within any of the five stages of second language acquisition (preproduction, early production, speech emergence, intermediate fluency and advanced fluency) AchieveEnglish for middle and high school students (Grades 6-12) addresses the needs of students whose second language acquisition falls within four stages of second language acquisition (preproduction, early production, speech emergence, and intermediate fluency).

Lessons emphasize the four steps in skill development:

  • 1. Model behavior or demonstrate skill
  • 2. Provide for guided practice
  • 3. Provide for independent practice
  • 4. Provide for delayed practice

There are a variety of activities utilized to accomplish the lesson objectives. Teachers model target words and language forms. Students are asked to say, read, write, and demonstrate comprehension of the target words and forms to ensure understanding of vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Lessons include visual, oral, tactile, and kinesthetic reinforcement. There are also many opportunities for repeated and monitored oral reading.
