High Road School of Sussex County

High Road School of Sussex County decisively and compassionately bridges the gap in education for students who present with a range of unique challenges. Our staff follow the road map of a student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) to guide and track the academic and behavioral progress of our student body. Individualized programming is aided by such High Road School program tools as hand-tailored lesson plans, small class sizes, personalized attention, and positive reinforcement. All of these program components, and more, combine to create unlimited opportunities for our students to experience success at High Road School of Sussex County.

High Road School of Sussex County meets the countless needs of our students by delivering highly structured academic and behavioral instruction and social skills training and by building and nurturing healthy peer relationships. We hold our students to a high level of accountability for their own education and their behavior while simultaneously displaying empathy for their learning challenges and skillfully assessing each student’s particular strengths and weaknesses.
Our curriculums are created in conjunction with the state of Delaware’s academic standards and are based on each student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan). As we follow the road maps these IEPs provide, we guide and track the academic and behavioral progress of our student body, aided by such High Road program tools as hand-tailored lesson plans, small class sizes, personalized attention, and positive reinforcement. All of these program components, and more, combine to create unlimited opportunities for our students to experience success at High Road School of Sussex County.

By focusing on key areas — academics, behavior modifications, support services, and transition / life planning services — we are able to meet the individual needs of all students through these varied approaches to instruction. Through collaboration with a student’s IEP team, we are able to choose the most appropriate learning model based on a given student’s present levels of performance, social capabilities, motor coordination, and ability to learn in a group setting.

Utilizing four specific instructional rotations, students are assessed academically, gain self-regulation skills, learn with district-aligned academic curriculums, and utilize integrated technology.

Throughout this school year, students have volunteered at Food Bank of Delaware, completed career readiness opportunities with the DVR-funded Future.Net, and participated in a men’s group alongside the DVR-funded Wise Guys. Students have also been accepted by Project Search to begin their post-secondary transition and participate in a yearly internship with DelDot. In the fall, high school students attended a Historically Black College (HBCU) job fair, toured a local trade school, and had first-hand experience with Delaware Technical Community College.
