Learning Tools and Activities Reduce Summer Learning Loss for Students on Maui
August 15, 2018 (Camden, NJ) – Catapult Learning, a leading provider of instructional intervention and professional development solutions, today announced the conclusion of its summer offerings at two Maui schools. Through a partnership between Catapult and the Hawaii Department of Education, students at Lihikai Elementary and Maui Waena Intermediate participated in programs designed to prevent summer learning loss.
Research shows that without the right blend of summertime instructional support and academic enrichment, many students risk losing so much ground that keeping up with their peers seems impossible. To prevent this educational slide, Catapult Learning’s summer program supports students in grades K-12 nationally by providing engaging and hands-on academic programs.
Helping Students Stay Engaged
Through its summer programs, Catapult Learning aims to engage students, increase their motivation to learn, and improve opportunities for academic growth and success. The research-based programs also help support struggling learners with the foundational skills they need to be successful, through systematic and explicit instruction that reinforces essential skills and quickly brings students up to speed.
Advancing Skills and Developing New Ones
Catapult Learning offers Summer STEM and Reading and Math programs to schools across the country. The STEM program features the Engineering Design process, which helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Summer STEM offering combines hands-on, project-based learning and a curriculum designed for small groups—encouraging students to engage and collaborate with their peers. Students develop 21st century skills applicable across all academic disciplines, with an emphasis on drawing connections to real world applications.
Each lesson is designed to create academic learning time where students are given multiple opportunities to actively participate and engage in academic conversations with their teachers and peers. AchieveReading strengthens students’ overall aptitude through skill-based instruction in alphabetics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, and builds important written composition skills. AchieveMath improves math skills, from basic concepts and computation, to problem solving, data collection, and geometry.
