Our high school government project, which was centered around the Midterm Election, challenged students to figure out what would happen if our class were ever shipwrecked on an island. Students were given the opportunity to name the island, which they ironically called Democracy Island, and then they were prompted to select candidates to run for leader/president of the Island.
Students Mekhi W. and Khrystian S. were chosen as the candidates for the highest seat, made from bamboo of course, on Democracy Island. Mekhi ran as a Democrat and Khrystian, a Republican.
The purpose of the lesson was for the class to learn about election campaigns and the important role that citizens play as voters. They learned about what is needed to run a successful campaign and the role the media plays in it, campaign funding, and the process of voting.
