In Environmental Science class Dylan explored ocean and wind currents. He blew air through a straw against a tub of water to simulate what happens to the ocean when wind gusts occur. Dylan observed what happened on the surface of the water as well as what happened below the surface. He sprinkled pepper on the surface of the water to make it easier to visualize the surface current. He used drops of dye to visualize what was going on underneath the surface.
Several different currents were constructed, such as gyres (circular flows) and currents that flowed around obstructions, representing islands. Through this interactive lab experiment, Dylan gained intuition for what ocean currents look like on the surface and below. He was particularly interested in the intricate patterns that the dye made as it spread throughout the water.
