The 6th grade class of Ms. Davis, Ms. Hill, and Mr. Woodward of High Road Academy, Laurel went on a field trip to WOWD-LP 94.3 FM in Takoma Park, MD. WOWD-LP Takoma Radio is an independent community radio serving Takoma Park, College Park, and Hyattsville in Maryland with some parts of Northeast and Northwest DC. The radio station is an LPFM (low power FM) meaning it operates at 100 watts or less reaching a 5-mile radius listening area. Our 6th grade students were given the opportunity to learn about live radio programming and broadcasting. They were able to use some basic radio equipment like the microphone, headphones, and audio console. The students did announcements and interviews, read scripts, and introduced songs to be played. At the conclusion of the trip, they were each given a CD as a souvenir program. It was an educational, interactive, and fun experience for the students and staff.
