One of the perks of being a student at the High Road of Hartford- High School is the proximity to public transportation! These students have a learning opportunity right outside the front doors; they are able to utilize the public transportation system to get to work site trainings.
The transition staff has worked hard to find job sites that make walking and taking the bus realistic for our students knowing this may be their mode of transportation as adults. The students researched bus routes with staff and completed a practice run with a school van following.
Now every Monday morning, students Christian and Mariana, along with a Teacher Assistant Mr. DeJesus, take bus 55 down Wethersfield Avenue to That Book Store; an independent bookstore on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield, CT.
Once a week they help owner Karen dust and organize the shelves. It’s a win-win as a new store. That Book Store gets some extra help and our students have another job experience to add to their resumes. When the responsibilities at the work site are complete our students board the bus and head back to school.
