High Road School of Wallingford High School barber shop has official open and been named the Hornet’s Lounge! On October 23rd and 24th barbers Sheldon and Jayson visited from their shop “Cutting Edge” to give students free haircuts. Before opening their shop in Bridgeport, they had experience working at another school in New York similar to High Road where they would also volunteer and give haircuts. Mr. Reid, a teaching assistant, organized the event and encouraged students to stay on color so they could participate. “A simple haircut can go a long way for adolescents. It can boost self-esteem, and encourage a sense of pride. It can also help build self-confidence to go out into the world and feel like they can accomplish anything in life.”
Students had the opportunity to get their haircut while learning about barbering. Students were also able to work in the barber shop if they were on color to earn money in their school account. They made sure that everything was clean in between clients and assisted the barbers with their equipment. We’re hoping to have Sheldon and Jayson visit us every other month to encourage interest and give students hands on learning experience in barbering and the trades. Thank you to Mr. Reid for organizing this and for Sheldon and Jayson for volunteering their time with us!
