Trip to the St. Louis Zoo

This month, students participating in Extended School Year enjoyed going on a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo. The zebras, Penguin & Puffin Coast, and monkeys exhibits were among the top favorites but nothing beat the water fans the students and staff found throughout the zoo on this hot summery day! High Road School Bleeds Blue!

The recent excitement of our local hockey team, the Blues, proceeding to (and winning!) the Stanley Cup Championship provided many opportunities for intertwining learning opportunities with current events. May Events and Activities

We wrapped up the end of the school year with a flurry of activities! Our second annual Family BBQ had a great turnout followed by a graduation party for our departing seniors. The students made their own tie-dye shirts for special events at school and put the skills they learned in our new Wellness Program to good use during an obstacle course competition. Field Day was a huge hit (for staff and students alike!), especially the water balloon free-for-all. We hope our students enjoy their break and come back ready to learn during the Extended School Year! If you [...]

High Road School Graduation Celebration

High Road School celebrated the graduation of two of our seniors this month! While the students participated in graduation ceremonies with their home school districts, we threw them our own graduation party complete with speeches, cake, and a final performance of the graduates favorite talents (beatboxing and skateboarding). We will miss their presence at our school but are so proud of their accomplishments and excited for their futures! Visit our website to learn more about High Road School

Special Olympics in Wright City

On April 26th, students and staff from the High Road School of Wright City had the pleasure of attending the third annual Special Olympics Track Meet at Wright City High School. The Special Olympics was created in 1968 and is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. We enjoyed cheering on the more than 200 participating student athletes and seeing Fredbird and Louie from the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues sports teams. Preparing Students for Independence

Aaron O'Neil, Program Director of the High Road School of Wright City, recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Warren County Record entitled "Preparing Students for Independence." In this letter, Aaron discussed the importance of the work he and his staff do to prepare their students for life beyond the classroom. "We work to ensure our students have the resources, knowledge and confidence to enter the workforce. Individualized career assessments, mock interviews, training programs and assistance with local job placement are integrated into our curriculum. Our team strives to help our students become happy, productive members of society [...]

Butterfly Release Day

Upon returning from Spring Break, each classroom at High Road School was given a Butterfly Growing Kit. The kits contained several caterpillars which the students were tasked with caring for through the various stages of transformation to a butterfly. The project inspired cross-curricular activities such as journal prompts, art projects, and research assignments. The students also took turns with feeding and observational tasks. By the time of their release outside, the butterflies - now known as Nelly, Morgan Freeman, Butterfree, Eminem, and Tae, among others - felt like a part of the High Road family! Several sightings have since [...]

Meet the Team: Mary Claire Engel

Mary Claire Engel, PLPC   I chose to go into the mental health field because I wanted to be equipped with the skills to support others in enacting positive changes in their lives. I currently have my master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My day-to-day routine usually consists of meeting with students for individual sessions, responding to crisis situations, leading groups, supporting staff, communicating with parents and partner agencies, and lots and lots of documentation! What I enjoy most about coming to work every day is that it always feels fresh [...]
