High Road School of Delaware
The High Road School of Delaware decisively and compassionately bridges the gap in education for students in grades 6–12 who present with a range of unique challenges, including but not limited to: learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, Asperger’s syndrome, and other autism spectrum disorders.
Since 2004, our program has been successfully meeting the myriad needs of our students by delivering highly structured academic and behavioral instruction and social skills training and by building and nurturing healthy peer relationships. We hold our students to a high level of accountability for their own education and their behavior while simultaneously displaying empathy for their learning challenges and skillfully assessing each student’s particular strengths and weaknesses. At the High Road School of Delaware, we apply a tutorial-style method of teaching, in which students are instructed one-on-one for at least one hour each morning in the core academic subjects of reading, mathematics, and writing. Academic skills are further developed and reinforced using computer programs and an individualized curriculum that caters to each student’s specific learning style.
Our curriculums are created in conjunction with the state of Delaware’s academic standards and are based on each student’s IEP, or Individualized Education Plan. As we follow the road maps these IEPs provide, we guide and track the academic and behavioral progress of our student body, aided by such High Road program tools as hand-tailored lesson plans, small class sizes, personalized attention, and positive reinforcement. All of these program components, and more, combine to create unlimited opportunities for our students to experience success at the High Road School of Delaware.
Healthy student relationships and age-appropriate social skills are fostered throughout all aspects of our school program. We impart the value of proper manners, making eye contact when speaking to others, and taking turns during conversation. While scholastic skills and behavior modification constitute the framework of our program, social skills training and character development form the bedrock of the High Road model. The effectiveness of our model is further enhanced by small-group activities and exercises, staff modeling, and a comprehensive Transition Program that prepares students for their next steps in school and in life. In the process, we help our students cultivate social maturity, personal awareness, a strong set of clear values, and effective communication skills. In our nurturing and empowering setting, students feel comfortable exploring the nuances of both peer and adult relationships.
The entire High Road School of Delaware staff is incredibly dedicated to ensuring continued growth in our program every school year. We aim to be as involved with our students, their families, and the community as possible for the benefit of the children and adolescents we serve. Accordingly, we’re always working to deepen and expand our commitment to our students through such means as hosting parent support groups, planning a variety of enriching extracurricular activities, and participating in community-based altruistic efforts, like charity walks and volunteer work.
