Technology in the Classroom

Technology-based learning is a vital supplement to the Sierra School’s core instruction, to familiarize our students with up-to-date hardware and software and to acclimate them to the products and programs so prevalent in their daily environment. Accordingly, we make concerted efforts to stay technologically current in our classrooms, outfitting them with multiple computers, all loaded with the latest instructional programs and teaching aids. We enhance basic computer skills and knowledge with leading-edge advancements, like disability-specific interactive software programs, adaptive technologies and equipment, and iPad-assisted learning.

Student Bank Accounts

All students at the Sierra School of Solano County are provided with an on-campus simulated checking account. Through the use of their Sierra account, students learn money-management skills, banking skills, and saving skills. Students learn to write checks, make withdrawals, make deposits, balance a checkbook, and purchase desired items. They can also save Sierra dollars to purchased gift cards or other desired items.

Student Store

Sierra’s Student Store provides students an opportunity to work on and develop shopping and purchasing skills. Students have the ability to shop for and purchase desired items using their Sierra dollars, held and tracked in the individual school bank accounts and checkbooks. This component of our program is managed by our students themselves, who practice customer service and math skills while assisting their fellow students.

Traveling Sports: The Sierra Panthers

Coach Frank heads our Sierra Panthers sports teams. The focus here is on simple athletic basics and teamwork. Students learn how to get along and work together to compete against various others schools in the city league. This program allows student to compete off-campus in individual games and tournaments. The Sierra Panthers sports teams include: softball, basketball, and flag football.

Zoo Keepers

This program focuses on teaching students the skills necessary to maintain and raise aquatic animals. Students learn to feed, maintain, and care for a variety of aquatic species. Through hands-on activities lef by Sierra School staff, students learn how and why specific animals need specific care and how to set up and clean aquariums, among other tasks.


Headed by Transition Coordinator Ms. Kathy, this program teaches students to make planters and plots, cultivate soil, and plant, raise, maintain, and harvest an actual garden. Our school garden is approximately 1,000 square feet during the summer and raises everything from tomatoes to squash. Students get to participate in hands-on activities and raise their own vegetables, which are then served in school lunches. Students also participate in local field trips to learn about farming and the environment.

Sierra Landscapers

This program focuses on teaching student how to maintain and care for a wide variety of ornamental plants. Students learn how to plant, trim, water, and transfer plants. They are exposed to numerous landscaping tools and are taught how to properly use and maintain them. Students get to take part in hands-on activities that impart both vocational skills and responsibility. Students learn how to change waste to compost and how to change sticks, twigs, and leaves into mulch.

Transition Program

Sierra’s Transition Program provides students with the link between classroom instruction and real-world activities. As such, it entails a comprehensive array of services and activities that prepare students for life after high school, including college preparation and career planning. Program components strengthen independent living skills, equip students with real-life abilities (like sewing and grocery shopping), provide vocational training, and simulate employment environments.

All Sierra School of Solano County students have access to this program, run by our full-time Transition Coordinator. The goal is to transfer ideas and concepts students learn in the classroom to practical and applicable settings both on- and off-campus, with a focus on guiding students toward productive and responsible young adulthoods and successful, fulfilling futures.
