Strengthening a state’s math instruction through job-embedded coaching and professional learning

Math scores across the country are declining at a historic rate. An effective way to not only break this trend but also reverse it is through high-quality instructional coaching and professional learning tailored to each district’s and school’s unique needs.
The latest NAEP assessment results, particularly in math, are alarming. The average scores for 13-year-olds during the 2022-23 school year declined 9 points in mathematics compared to the previous assessment just a few years ago. Compared to a decade ago, the average score declined 14 points in mathematics.* Math results in the state of Mississippi followed these trends.
In 2022, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) identified that several schools throughout the state demonstrated learning gaps in mathematics. With a goal of strengthening its math department, MDE engaged Catapult Learning to support its efforts in ensuring that the proper level of coaching and training was available to school staff statewide.
With our support, MDE began providing cohesive, ongoing, classroom-focused, mathematics professional development in Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and various MDE program offices in January 2023. We are also heavily focused on building capacity through job-embedded mathematics instructional coaching to over 75 public schools throughout Mississippi.
Over the next three-plus years, we will continue to develop and provide a structured framework of professional development supports and solutions, including recruiting, vetting, selecting, hiring, and deploying math coaches and/or content area staff.
