Next Generation Science Standards

August 7 & August 14 This introductory session will introduce teachers to the paradigm shift involved with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Compared to previous standards which task students to “describe” or “understand,” the NGSS emphasizes understanding science through Science and Engineering Practices. The standards draw on thematic connections through Crosscutting Concepts beyond just the content taught, also referred to as the Disciplinary Core Ideas by the standards. This model also provides a tremendous amount of insight regarding assessment and interdisciplinary learning.
We will focus on the dimensions of NGSS, phenomenon-based learning (a strategy to tackle all dimensions of the standard), and shifts in the Disciplinary Core Ideas to ensure that teachers know the boundary of content ideas in their grade-level. Opportunities to initially plan and pace the year with the Catapult coach will be provided.
Grades K through 2nd: 10am – 11:45am
Grades 3rd through 5th: 12pm – 1:45pm
Grades 6th through 8th: 2pm – 3:45pm
