About the Presenters:

Carol Dissen, Boston University

Carol Dissen, the lead author of the Enhanced Core Reading Instruction curriculum, has extensive experience and significant contributions to the field of literacy education, showcasing a steadfast dedication to enhancing reading outcomes for students and aiding educators in implementing impactful practices. With a career spanning over 25 years, she has conducted workshops at various levels—from local schools to international sites—where she has ardently supported educators in adopting evidence-based literacy practices.

In her direct engagements with schools, teaching staff, and leadership, Carol has been instrumental in constructing robust multi-tiered systems of support. This includes the implementation of explicit and systematic Tier I and Tier II instructional systems, the intensification of interventions at Tier III, fostering effective literacy leadership, and establishing proficient data use systems. Her tenure at the University of Oregon, Center on Teaching and Learning, exceeding two decades, has been marked by active participation in literacy research grants aimed at propelling advancements in literacy education. Beyond these roles, Carol has donned various hats throughout her career, serving as a K-6 literacy coach, Title 1 reading teacher, and classroom educator, showcasing a diverse and comprehensive understanding of literacy education.

Jess Surles, Research Scientist, Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development

Jess Surles is a research scientist at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. Ms. Surles partners with literacy experts and university researchers to integrate current research and professional learning for classroom practitioners, leadership, and educational agencies. Her recent work includes curriculum development, supporting educators with the implementation of evidence-based literacy practices, and guiding elementary school leaders in building and sustaining an effective school-wide reading system.

Before coming to BU Wheelock, Ms. Surles worked as a school district coach and Title I reading specialist in Oregon. Previously, she was an instructor of multilingual learners and a classroom teacher in North Carolina.

Sue Gerenstein, VP of Professional Development, Catapult Learning

Sue Gerenstein is Vice President, Professional Development, and is responsible for the overall development and implementation of Catapult Learning’s professional development programs. Sue brings more than 40 years of experience in teaching, school administration, management, professional development, marketing, and product development to her role. Before joining Catapult Learning, Sue served as the Vice President for Academic Partnerships for American Reading Company and Senior Director of Education for Foundations, Inc. Prior to these appointments, Sue was the Vice President of Professional Development and Curriculum for EdisonLearning, and oversaw the development of the products, tools and resources associated with school design implementation, including the creation and coordination of professional development and supporting resources designed to facilitate improved student performance in our partnership schools and alternative academies. Sue has extensive experience creating and delivering professional development which include topics related to leadership, curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, data analysis, assessment, student support, learning environment, student management, RtI and special education compliance. Sue taught and supervised practicum students and student teachers in elementary and special education while attending UW-Madison.

Sue earned her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in instructional technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University. She acquired supervisory certification from Seton Hall University.

Susan Elhert, National PD Specialist, Catapult Learning

Sue graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (1-8) from Cleveland State University and later earned a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Cleveland State University.

Sue has worked in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for 34 years. She has taught elementary and middle school and spent two years as an assistant principal. As a teacher, she supported ECRI (Enhanced Core Reading Instruction) as a Local Coach in current research by AIR (American Institutes for Research). ECRI enhances the core program that the school uses by applying active engagement routines and an explicit, systematic approach to teaching early literacy. Sue has delivered ECRI routines and coached teachers in Foundation Skills, Vocabulary, and Comprehension for three years.

Sue has guided staff members in effectively using data collection during her teaching career. She has helped establish and worked with MTSS-R building and grade-level teams to analyze student performance and implementation to adjust instruction and improve student outcomes. Sue has helped create and write lesson plans for her district’s scope and sequence. She has mentored struggling teachers as a PAR (Peer Assistance Review) Advisor and has conducted all evaluative measures for the teacher. She scores the Ohio Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA).

Sue resides in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband, Dave. She has three children and two grandchildren. She enjoys reading, the outdoors, and spending time with family.

Patty McGraw, National PD Specialist, Catapult Learning

Patty McGraw has been in education for over 30 years.  She currently is a National Consultant for Catapult Learning and for the last 6 years has been working with teachers and schools in implementing ECRI (Enhanced Core Reading Instruction). For the last 3 years, she has also been a part of two research studies with ECRI as an External Coach supporting the schools with ECRI implementation. In her years of experience, she has taught in elementary, middle, and high school, and for the last 14 years has been an Instructional Coach in all grade levels as well.
