Ms. Lekaunas is my teacher and she really makes me feel close to home.  She calms me down and makes it easy for me to be at school.  Mr. McBride makes my classroom fun, he makes it so school isn’t too serious.  I don’t always know what to expect with Mr. McBride.  Ms. Romo is someone I can relate too.  She also keeps the classroom clean, she notices all the details that I do that may need attention in the classroom.  [...]

Gabriel’s Angels offers a safe space for at-risk students to learn

The Arizona Republic visited Aurora Day School to highlight the great work our students and Gabriel's Angels are doing. Gabriel's Angels is a nonprofit which provides animal-assisted activities which involve dogs and other animals in recreational and educational programs. Over the course of 18 weeks, students spend 15-20 minutes a week reading with the dogs which leads to increasing their confidence in a safe space where our students thrive. “Zane used to struggle with reading, but when he started working with Michelle and Caymus, all of a sudden, he really blossomed." –Robin Puckett, an Aurora school therapist Read the story [...]

Settling Back In and a Field trip

Well here we are nearing the end of our second week back from winter break. The students have been able to come and settle right back into the routine. For the rest of the school year, I would like to try and make learning more fun for my students. Today we went over the scientific method in preparation for the 100th day egg drop that will take place on the 25th. The students came up with a hypothesis and figured out which materials they would need to protect the egg from breaking when dropped. During math we played math jeopardy. [...]

When Your Child’s Behavior Becomes Extreme

When children refuse to clean up their toys or eat their vegetables, most parents know how to best handle the situation. But what if a child’s reaction to appropriate consequences is extreme, escalating to physical aggression and even property damage and making the home unsafe? When children act out in these ways, it can be very disconcerting for everyone involved. Parents often take on blame and can feel too ashamed [...]
